Kill Your Subscriptions 7 min read · April 2026

A homeschool family was juggling three planning apps. We built one that replaced all of them.

The curriculum told them what to teach. It did not tell them when, how, or in what order. We built an app that does.

TL;DR

A homeschool family using Classical Learner had the curriculum but no way to schedule it. They were paying for three separate tools to plan, track, and organize. We built one custom app that handles all of it — scheduling, per-child tracking, live class links, progress reports, and AI-powered schedule insights. Zero monthly fees. They own it.

The problem with most homeschool planning tools

When you homeschool with a curriculum like Classical Learner or Classical Conversations, you get a list of courses. What you do not get is a plan. Which subjects go on which days? How do you schedule two kids with overlapping and independent coursework? What about live online classes with specific time slots?

Most families cobble this together with a combination of Google Calendar, a spreadsheet, and one or two paid planning apps. Each tool handles one piece. None of them talk to each other. And every week, the parent — who is also the teacher, the principal, and the IT department — has to manually stitch it all together.

The family who came to us was doing exactly this. Three paid subscriptions. Hours of manual planning every week. And a nagging feeling that there had to be a better way.

What we built

We built a single web application that takes their existing curriculum and turns it into a fully scheduled, trackable school plan. Not a template. Not a printable PDF. A living, working system.

✓ Takes the full curriculum and auto-schedules it across the week
✓ Per-child views — each student sees only their assignments
✓ Dashboard with today's lessons, completion checkboxes, and progress tracking
✓ Live class integration — join links right in the schedule
✓ Week-at-a-glance and monthly calendar views
✓ AI-powered schedule insights that analyze patterns and suggest adjustments
✓ Rollover tracking for missed lessons
✓ Worksheets, library resources, and course materials all in one place
✓ Cloud backup with local auto-save

What it replaced

Three paid subscriptions: a curriculum planner, a progress tracker, and a scheduling tool. Combined monthly cost before: roughly $30-45/month. Combined monthly cost after: zero. The app runs on their own hosting. They own the code. There is no vendor who can raise prices, change features, or shut down.

The curriculum tells you what to teach. This app tells you when, how, and in what order — and keeps track of whether it actually happened.

Why this matters beyond homeschooling

This is the pattern we see over and over. A person or business has a process that works but is held together with duct tape — multiple tools, manual coordination, and the constant overhead of being the human glue between systems that do not talk to each other.

The fix is not always a new subscription. Sometimes the fix is one custom tool that does exactly what you need and nothing you do not.

What this costs vs. what they were paying

A one-time build fee versus a recurring monthly cost that never ends. Within a few months, the custom app pays for itself. After that, every month is pure savings. And if they ever want to change something — add a feature, adjust the layout, integrate a new resource — they call us. No support ticket. No feature request form. No waiting for a product team to prioritize it.

If you are managing a process with three tools and a spreadsheet, that is not a workflow. That is a workaround. Let us build the real thing.
